As a long-time member of the San Diego community, Jerome's Furniture is dedicated to giving back to our friends and neighbors. One way we do this is through community involvement with organizations such as these.

Jerome's Furniture Provides 355 New Mattresses for the USS Midway

April 2013

Ted Muehleisen - Jerome's Furniture

April was a busy month for Jerome's in the Community.  We started with a delivery of 355 custom made mattresses to the USS Midway.  When Jerry Navarra, owner of Jerome's Furniture, found out they need mattresses for their overnight program he stepped in and made it happen.

These weren't normal twin size mattresses: they had to be 28" wide, 4" deep, have a waterproof cover, and quality foam.  This was a sailor's dream!  The best part of the delivery was watching the volunteers unload them.  It was like a bucket brigade, one at a time until all 355 of the mattresses were on board and on a bunk.

The USS Midway has some unique programs that nobody else offers.  The overnight program allows organizations such as the Boy Scouts or youth groups to spend the night and feel what it's like to be a sailer sleeping on an aircraft carrier.  Only now they have much more comfortable mattress thanks to Jerome's.  If you have an opportunity go on board and see some exciting history.  They have volunteer docents that served on the Midway and can share some unbelievable stories!  For more about the Midway go to www.midway.org.

Another Successful Beach Cleanup

July 28, 2012 Jerome's Furniture partnered with I Love A Clean San Diego to adopt La Jolla Shores and host another successful beach cleanup.  Over 100 volunteers came out to support the effort and more than 300 lbs of trash and 40 lbs of recycleables were collected from what many consider to be one of San Diego's cleanest beaches.

"With nearly 60 years in San Diego, we know how important area beaches are to our customers," said Jerry Navarra, chairman of Jerome's.  "We're happy to bring some added fun with giveaways, food and prizes to those who roll up their sleeves for our community."

Visit the Adopt-A-Beach website to learn more about adopting a local beach or inland area.

Jerome's Best Seat in the House at Soboba Casino

Ted Muehleisen - Jerome's Furniture

When I hear the word Bingo I think of wheelchairs, walkers, and blue hair or no hair at all, and most of the time that is probably a correct assumption except when it's at Soboba Casino.  Jerome's Furniture teamed up with Soboba Casino and 101.3FM "The Mix" for a fun day of outdoor bingo.  Why outdoors?  Because they don't have a room indoors large enough for 8,000 people!  That's right, 8,000 people playing bingo and lots of them were on motorcylces, not wheelchairs.  The first prize we gave away was a beautiful Jerome's living room set that the winner was able to sit on and play the rest of the games up on stage for a chance to win other great prizes.  They had trips to Cabo San Lucas and the Caribbean, concerts, and a grand prize of $25,000 cash (1 in 8,000 for a chance to win $25,000 cash)!  Why buy lottery tickets?  I love the odds!  Yes, this was definitely not your grandma's bingo and well worth anyone's drive to Soboba Casino.  I was told they are hoping for over 10,000 people at their next event!

Morena District Certified Farmer's Market

Recently a new Farmer's Market opened up at 1220 - 1240 W. Morena Blvd in the parking lot between Petco & Toys R Us.  Hours are Tuesdays, 3pm - 7pm, rain or shine.  The market is run by Brian Beevers, owner of Brian's Farmer's Markets, a successful local company presently operating the Farmer's Markets in Pt. Loma, Golden Hill, UTC, Mission Hills, and Imperial Beach.

Brian's Farmer's Markets accepts only herbicide and pesticide free farms as vendors.  He gives priority to artisans who sell products with low environmental impact or that benefit the environment in some way.  His markets are also among a very small number of San Diego farmers markets that accept "electronic benefit transfer" so that recipients of public assistance in California can also buy organic and pesticide-free produce.

Area residents who are fans of fresh, organic, locally raised foods can finally enjoy shopping at a farmers' market close to home.  Support the market early and often to help it get off to a good start!

The Morena District Certified Farmer's Market will offer a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program as well.  Members pick up their share of produce from multiple farms every week and can even trade out produce to customize their box.  There is a 12 week commitment for either Small Share ($15/week) or a Large Share ($25/week), with a one-time set up fee of $35.

Jerome's Furniture Invites Community to Support City of Hope in its Fight Against Cancer

"Be the Match" Registry Drive and Walk for Hope Sign-ups will take place from 11am to 3pm on Saturday, May 12 at Jerome's San Diego Showroom

San Diego, Calif. - May 1, 2012 - Family-owned and operated,  Jerome's Furniture is proud to announce its support as local sponsor for the City of Hope, a leader in the fight to conquer cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, and other life-threatening diseases.  The organization recognized Jerome's with a Lifetime Achievement due to its dedication to the City of Hope for decades.  Once again, Jerome's goal is to build awareness and participation for Walk for Hope, which will raise funds for City of Hope.

New this year, Jerome's is hosting a Be the Match Registry Drive, where locals can join a registry of over 9.5 million committed marrow donors which exists to save lives.  Everyday thousands of people with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases search for a donor who can make their transplant possible, but the fact is, only 3 out of 10 patients receive the transplant that can save their life.  Join Star 94.1 and Hula, from the AJ in the Morning show, along with the City of Hope staff and volunteers who will register Be the Match volunteers and Walk for Hope participants on Sat., May 12 from 11am to 3pm at Jerome's San Diego showroom (1190 W. Morena Blvd., San Diego, CA 92110).

At the drive guests can also sign up for the upcoming Walk for Hope, an inspiring event planned for Sat., May 19 at Point Loma Nazarene University, selected for its stunning views and central location.  Walkers will participate in a 4K and will be joined by thousands of attendees who are part of a movement to help people whose lives have been touched by cancer to have hope and be able to live longer, healthier lives.

"We're proud to extend our support," said Jerry Navarra, chairman of Jerome's Furniture.  "Last year, our employees and customers rallied together to help bring the City of Hope one step closer to achieving its vision to one day provide a cure for all cancers.  We were inspired by the messages of hope; and I believe this year, we'll get even more support through our Be the Match drive and sponsorship."

Jerome's Furniture Helps Fund Del Sur Elementary School Program

On January 6, Jerome's donated $6000 to Del Sur Elementary School to support a new program called Engineering is ElementaryRepresenatives from Jerome's, including Chairman, Jerry Navarra; Director of Marketing Jim Navarra and President and CEO Lee Goodman presented a check during the school's bi-weekly Flag Day assembly.

The Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project promotes engineering and technological literacy among children. EiE will provide Del Sur Elementary School students with a research-based, standards-driven, and classroom-tested curriculum that integrates engineering and technology concepts and skills with elementary science topics. EiE lessons not only promote K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning, but also connect with literacy and social studies.

"As a local, family-owned business, we always want to give back when we can," said Jerry Navarra, chairman at Jerome's.  "Local schools like Del Sur Elementary are critical to support the education of the next generation in our communities.  Programs like Engineering is Elementary will provide students with an inventive, interactive learning experience.  We're glad to help - it's important to us, our employees and our customers."

Del Sur Elementary will implement the EiE program this spring.  Students will engage in many activities from replicating an artifact to designing a knee brace.

"We appreciate the generosity of Jerome's Furniture," said Doug Johnson, principal at Del Sur Elementary School.  "With their help, we've ordered the necessary equipment and are eager to get the program started.  The on-site ceremony at Del Sur created  a special dedication - Jerry is a familiar face to many students who see him on TV."

I Love A Clean San Diego

I Love A Clean San Diego is the San Diego County coordinator of the statewide Adopt-A-Beach program. This program is great for groups who want to participate in volunteer work on an ongoing basis. While the name suggests that only beaches are available for adoption, there are also a number of inland locations that need cleaning up. Visit the Adopt-A-Beach website to learn more about adopting a local beach or inland area.

This past August 2011 Jerome’s partnered with I Love A Clean San Diego to clean up La Jolla Shores as part of our “Life’s a Beach” campaign with KYXY radio. Nearly 100 volunteers, employees, family, and friends worked together to collect 125 pounds of trash and 18 pounds of recyclables.

Just In Time for Foster Youth

Jerome's is proud to support Just in Time for Foster Youth, an organization that works with transitioning foster youth.  Every year hundreds of foster youth face huge obstacles as they age out of the foster care system.  Without the family support that most of us and our children had at that age, these teens are at risk for heading down the wrong path.  Many are unemployed and very few attend college.  Just In Time works with these youth to keep them on a path to self suficiency.

Recently, Jerome's partnered with Just In Time to provide one such youth with all the essential pieces of furniture for her new apartment. Our team members were absolutely delighted to meet her and hear her story.   Working full time and going to school, Melanie is studying to be a Marine Biologist.  In her spare time she is working on filling her art portfolio with her own original abstract paintings and drawings.  She also enjoys playing guitar, cooking, and healthy eating habits.

Walk For Hope 2011

Walk for Hope is a national movement, uniting survivors and supporters, women, men, and children, in the fight against women's cancers. This movement looks to the eight national walks as an opportunity to raise necessary funds to continue ground breaking research, treatment and education at City of Hope and to raise awareness for women's cancers.

This year Jerome's Furniture, employees, family, friends, and customers came together to support the cause. Jerome's hosted a booth at the event with recliners for people to sit on and promoted the event in our showrooms with an in-store display encouraging customers to donate and get involved. Jerome's raised a total of $1,830.42. The Walk for Hope raised over $100,000.00 in the San Diego event.

Chula Vista Police Department Storefront now open in the Otay Ranch Town Center

The Chula Vista Police Department recently opened a new storefront in the Otay Ranch Town Center in Eastern Chula Vista. The storefront was able to open at no expense to taxpayers. The furniture was donated by Jerome's, General Growth Properties is providing the space rent free, and the Chula Vista Police Historical Foundation donated artifacts for display in the storefront. Police are hoping that crime rates will drop as the storefront will allow them to meet more of the public. On behalf of Jerome's Furniture, Ted Muehleisen accepted an award from the Chief of Police, David Bejarano, thanking Jerome's for its support and contributions to the storefront.

Door of Hope

The Door of Hope was built in 1964 and today has apartments and programs for pregnant and parenting teens, homeless mothers with children and women recovering from addiction. The women are also helped with career counseling, parenting classes and many other programs to stabilize their lives. The mom will find a job, save the money she earns and with loving support be able to transform her life and her children's lives and transition into permanent housing.
